May 17, 2020 Proclaimed DIPG Awareness Day

Despite the effects of the pandemic, Governor Jim Justice carried out his promise to declare May 17, 2020 as DIPG Awareness day for the state of West Virginia.

Whereas, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG) is a rare brain tumor that affects between 150 and 300 children in the United States each year. At this time there is no known cure; and

Whereas, DIPG is a brain tumor located in the pons of the brainstem which acts as a bridge in helping control vital functions and sensations such as, breathing, swallowing, bladder control, hearing, eye movement, balance, tast, and sleep; and

Whereas,  while research over the last ten years has helped improve quality of life for DIPG patients, and increased life expectancy, the prognosis is still poor – with the median survival rate being from 8 to 11 months; and

Whereas, West Virginia is committed to promoting the health and welfare of all citizens of the Mountain State and supports efforts to raise public awareness of this deadly childhood cancer.

Now, Therefore, Be it Resolved that I, Jim Justice, Governor of the Great State of West Virginia, do hereby proclaim May 17, 2020 as:

Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma Awareness Day

in the Mountain State, and encourage all citizens to join me in this observance.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of West Virginia to be affixed.

Done at the Capitol, City of Charleston, State of West Virginia, this the First day of May, in the year of our Lord, Two Thousand Twenty, and in the One Hundred Fifty-Seventh year of the State.
